Situated in Baltimore, West Cork - the Beacon, also known at the Lot's Wife, after the fabled woman who turned into a Pillar of Salt.
It sits on the mainland outside of Baltimore, overlooking Sherkin Island - and built at the order of the British government following the 1798 Rebellion. It is part of a series of lighthouses and beacons dotted around the Irish coast, forming a warning system.
