The Skellig

The wild Island of Skellig Michael as seen from below Clogher Head on the Dingle Peninsula. 

This island, recently made famous in Star Wars, is a well-preserved 6th century monastic settlement.

The Skellig was home to the monks of St Fionan. These monks led very simple lives out in the wild Atlantic, living in stone beehive shaped huts.

It is one of only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Republic of Ireland
